Sunday 26th July – Windsurf *** River Orwell at Levington – sunny
periods and squally showers!
Foil – 18.53 knot max, 16.67 knot ave., 8.13 knot hour, 14.54 knot mile,
24.39 km., 13.20 knot alpha.
Starboard Freeride 150 and a Tushingham Bolt 5.75m.
With the wind starting WSW but quickly turning W Levington was the go to
venue for today but with high water at 10 it was a fairly early start,
winger Andrew M was heading out at nine but I was not in that much of a
hurry as I wanted the wind to turn west as WSW is not the best direction
for Levington! In the end I arrived at the marina about 9.15, Andy’s car
was there but there was no sign of him so I set up and with wind gusting to
nearly 20 I rigged 5.75m, I then spotted Andy sailing back from Felixstowe
docks but the wind looked patchy down there! I launched at 10 but the wind
had gone patchy and I could not get the board to fly so I returned to
shallow water to remove the weed off the foil! I had a few runs in the
front of the marina in the up and down winds before the wind turned west
and I managed a few long runs down to Felixstowe docks, gybing right in
front of a large container ship. The sky then turned dark as the rain
arrived along with it a top squall with the wind gusting to nearly 30
knots! I found an area with a little less wind and sailed there until the
squall passed which then messed with the wind as I slowly beat back, I got
flying a few times near my van before going light, it did pick up again
later but it was too late for me as I had already packed up! So showered
and home by one without a long trip into Essex for a sail on the Stour:)
PS - the highlight of the day was sailing with the diving terns:)
